Announcing our new chapbook series, with three titles from Francine Simon, Kobus Moolman (with Shubnum Khan), and H.I.E. Dhlomo

August 26, 2019

uHlanga is proud to announce a new series of chapbooks, beginning with three new titles: Shark by Francine Simon, All and Everything by Kobus Moolman (with Shubnum Khan), and Valley of a Thousand Hills by H.I.E. Dhlomo.

These slim, saddle-stitched volumes are have a slightly bigger page size than our other titles, with bold and beautiful covers, a cheaper price point, and intriguing, immersive poetry. Retailing at R100, these are perfect gifts or introductions to local poetry for the curious reader.

Some of our chapbooks are re-issues of classic volumes, and make important texts available, accessible and affordable in print for the first time in decades — perfect for academics and students.

Shark by Francine Simon consists of twenty queer and tender love poems by, for, and about sharks. Each poem is a different shark! It is the Durban-born, Italy-based poet’s follow-up to her successful 2017 debut, Thungachi.

All and Everything by Kobus Moolman, subtitled Scenes from a Winter Farmland, is a fragmentary, meditative, and minimalist long poem accompanied by ink drawings by author and artist Shubnum Khan.

Valley of a Thousand Hills by H.I.E. Dhlomo is the long-overdue new edition of the classic mini-epic poem, written by one of the most influential Black South African authors of the early 20th Century. It is an elegiac tale written for the eponymous area of modern KwaZulu-Natal, told through the lens of Zulu history and mythology.

All three of these titles are printed in limited first editions, and are available to order from bookstores now.

Any issues with bookstores not being able to order the books should be resolved by pointing them to our distributors, Protea Boekhuis, or supplying them with the ISBN of the title you’re trying to order, available on the publication page of each book on this website. Further issues can be reported to us on our about page.

uHlanga is proud to present ‘a corpse is also a garden’, the first English poetry collection by @pietermodendaal 🌸🌾 “Pieter Madibuseng Odendaal is one of the leading young Afrikaans poets of his generation. In this, a self-translated selection of poems from his first two collections, readers in English get to experience Odendaal’s stunningly confident and self-deconstructing work for the first time.” Odendaal’s understated, precise style exhibits a maturity beyond his years – whether he is reckoning with the hideous deeds of his ancestors, the tribulations of young love, or the various everyday beauties and horrors of modern South Africa. These are poems that affirm our deepest and most profound connections, both with each other and our environments – the places that birth us, and the earth to which we all return. 🌿🫛 Available in August, you can read more about ‘a corpse is also a garden’ now: https://uhlangapress.co.za/pieter-madibuseng-odendaal-a-corpse-is-also-a-garden #uHlanga #CorpsePoems #poet #poems #PieterMadibusengOdendaal

In 2014, uHlanga was born as a small poetry magazine from KwaZulu-Natal. There were too few places that celebrated South African poetry, especially that of writers just starting out. We began publishing books in 2015. Ten years later, we’ve published both debut writers and established voices. We’ve seen our books win national and international prizes, live on in syllabuses, and be pressed into the hands of new readers who whisper, “This one changed me.” We’ve spent a decade building a home for South African poetry that is bold, quiet, strange, familiar, brave and yes, beautiful. To everyone who has submitted, published, read, stocked, reviewed, taught, shared, or loved an uHlanga book — thank you. Here’s to ten years of poems. “In summer, a time of plenty, I spread leaves like puzzle pieces. I want to create an Eden forever green. Recreate that moment between man and serpent. The breeze is disobedient, and the leaves fleet away like dust.” With exquisite clarity and poise, @nondwe’s debut collection guides us through dreamscapes of ritual, harvest and destitution – of tornado-stricken villages, mythical beings, and the eternally evanescent promise of love. Born in 1995, in Lubaleko, emaXesibeni, on the rural plains of the Eastern Cape, Mpuma was a a Mellon Mays Fellow during her undergraduate studies.
