ABOUT

uHlanga is a poetry press run by Nick Mulgrew.

Founded in 2014 as a magazine of poetry from KwaZulu-Natal, uHlanga now focuses on publishing beautiful collections of poetry, predominantly in English, but also in isiXhosa, isiZulu and Afrikaans. We publish a small quantity of edited anthologies.

Our books have won most major South African and African poetry awards, including three Ingrid Jonker Prizes for Poetry in English (Thabo Jijana, Saaleha Idrees Bamjee, and Jacques Coetzee), two South African Literary Awards for Poetry (Helen Moffett and Musawenkosi Khanyile) and two Glenna Luschei Prizes for African Poetry (Koleka Putuma and Maneo Mohale). Our books are taught in universities and schools around the world, and have been translated into German, Swedish, Danish, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Dutch. We also supply books to BlindSA’s digital services for print-disabled readers in South Africa.

From 1 October 2025, all of our books are represented to the trade by Blue Weaver and distributed by Booksite.

Overseas our books are available in print from the African Books Collective.

uHlanga’s books are printed in Cape Town, and published in Durban, South Africa, a UNESCO City of Literature.

We offer a free digital guide to writers interested in self-publishing, called These Notes Are Yours.

Our social media is provided by Stoep Collective.

Regrettably, we do not offer internships or work experience placements.
